Insight on the Health Benefits of Functional Food: Dark Chocolate

Abstract:
Dark
chocolate is known for its rich content of bioactive compounds such as
polyphenols and flavonoids, which possess potent antioxidant properties that
counteract oxidative stress and lower the risk of chronic diseases like
cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. Studies have shown that dark
chocolate consumption can improve cardiovascular health by enhancing
endothelial function and reducing blood pressure. Mendelian randomization
studies have further indicated a potential decrease in the risk of essential
hypertension and venous thromboembolism. Additionally, dark chocolate may favour
lipid metabolism, weight management, and inflammation in individuals with
chronic kidney disease. There is also emerging evidence suggesting that dark
chocolate could positively influence cognitive function and mood and offer
protection against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Researchers are exploring innovative fortification methods to enhance the
nutritional profile of dark chocolate and maximize its health benefits. In this
review, we have summarized the investigation of the association between dark
chocolate consumption and its health-promoting effects.
